Chapter

Twenty-One

Rain hammered my car as if the clouds had chosen buckets over mere drops to drench the world. My windshield wipers worked furiously against the relentless downpour. A burst of headlights briefly flashed in my rearview mirror. The vehicle weaved through the vacant lot, throwing up sheets of rainwater, before coming to a stop beside mine. I pressed the button to unlock my vehicle. Within moments, a figure dressed in a black coat yanked the door open and swiftly climbed in.

“The Lord must feel my anger,” Larsen grumbled, wiping his face with a handkerchief. He was soaked from the short walk between his car and mine.

I ignored his usual sarcasm and pulled out the folder from the side of my car. I held it up toward him, but he just looked at it over his rain-speckled glasses.

“You never told me that Richter paid you a visit and you two had a little story time.”

“Because no stories were exchanged, and I’ve got better things to do than set up a meeting and drive all this way just to soothe your nerves over nothing,” I shot back.

Larsen raised both eyebrows at me. “Richter is all over this. He was clever enough to match your handwriting from the map you gave me to the ticket you handed him. Which, now that we’re opening up here, you also failed to mention. Is it true then? You invited him to your concert?”

I nodded.

“Damn it, Leah. Are you trying to get caught?” Larsen stared out at the rain.

I lowered the folder in my hand. This conversation would take longer than I had anticipated.

“Calm yourself. I need to be razor sharp for the Train Track Killer. I found something in those files you gave me.”

I held the folder back up, but Larsen merely glanced at it before turning his attention back to the downpour outside the windshield. “I don’t know what games you’re playing with Richter, but I don’t think I can stop him if he were to find something else on you,” Larsen said. “He’s one of those guys—”

“Who won’t stop until it’s done. Determination. Dedication. Discipline. Quite admirable if you ask me.”

Anger flashed in Larsen’s eyes. “Not if it will destroy us and all we’ve worked for.”

“You’ll be relieved to know, then, that I invited Agent Richter to the concert so he could have a chance encounter with Luca Domizio.”

Larsen’s eyes widened. “The former head of the Domizio mob?”

I nodded. “Everybody knows about his involvement in drug smuggling.”

“It was the trial of a lifetime. The whole world was shocked when he was found not guilty. The boss of one of the biggest drug syndicates in history. If they ever find out about me, I’ll hire his lawyer no matter the cost.”

“You should spend your money on his assassin, not his lawyer. There were no witnesses left at the trial.”

Larsen furrowed his brow. “Regardless of how he got off the hook, the feds monitored him for years. Domizio has since left the drug trade behind, so this chance encounter won’t help us.
